Parent Letter

Dear Parents,

Your child will have the chance to solve his/her own science mystery by doing a science project, a mandatory assignment for you child’s class.

Since your child can pick their own science project question, they will have the chance to pick something they want to learn more about.

When starting a science fair project, a student chooses a question they would like to answer. Then, they do the research and development to gain background information needed to form a hypothesis and design an experiment procedure. After forming a hypothesis, the student performs the experiment, draws conclusions, and communicates the results to teachers and classmates through a report and display board.

Through time management and project planning, your child will take on the responsibility of completing this project over a 7 week period. I have included a 7th Grade Science Fair Project Timeline (see page 3 of 5 and 4 of 5) of when thing should be done. Please help your child follow this schedule. This is not a project that can be done overnight! They need to organize themselves.

Every child has been given a Science Fair Project Research Journal to start recording any data they find. They have begun searching online for project ideas and some have already found what they want to do. Please continue to help your child find an idea. Their Topic should be selected by December 14, 2007 and they should begin expanding on them and form their question by December 21, 2007. They will turn in both their Research Journals and their Science Project Proposal Form. I will return everything the same day I get it to ensure they have enough time to complete all sections of the project on time.

A great resource for Science Fair Projects is Science Buddies:    www.sciencebuddies.org

I would appreciate if you looked at this site and read the different topics. The students can use these sites to understand the Scientific Method  and why they have to use this while they complete the project. A poster can be found on Science Buddies Weblink, page 2, your child, with your help, should use it as a guide on how to follow the Scientific Method.
